4 MIPS TIPS for Covid-19 Relief and a Successful End of Year

As we approach the end of 2020, we’d like to make sure healthcare organizations are aware of what’s available now for the MIPS program. Below we have some tips on what is available:

Performance Year 2019 Feedback

(This is available but requesting a targeted review has ended)

Accessing your 2019 performance information including your final score and payment adjustment information can be completed by accessing your HARP account via the QPP Website If you do not have a HARP account you can register here and learn more by accessing the user guide.

Exception Applications

Exception Applications are available to take advantage of before the end of the year. The Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Exception application allows you to request reweighting for any or all performance categories if you encounter an extreme and uncontrollable circumstance or public health emergency, such as COVID-19, that is outside of your control. This is ideal for practices, that perhaps have been closed down for a period of time, or lost staffing which has had an impact on data collection and the practice overall.

The MIPS Promoting Interoperability Performance Category Hardship Exception applications allows you to request reweighting specifically for the Promoting Interoperability performance category. Reweighting would be moved toward your quality and improvement categories specifically. If you have been impacted by COVID-19, are a small practice or have other specified reasons identified by the QPP, this application is available through December 2020.

Complex Patient Bonus

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, CMS has doubled the maximum points available for the complex patient bonus from 5 to 10 points. This bonus would be added to your MIPS 2020 Final score. To find out more about the Complex Patient Bonus in the QPP 2019 fact sheet. You can access the file sheet here.

New COVID-19 Improvement Activity

CMS released a new improvement activity related to COVID-19.  This improvement activity focus’s on patient data sent through a clinical data registry or participation  in clinical trials. Additional information is provided for review by referencing the MIPS Data Validation Criteria. To view this Criteria complete the form below.
